About Search & Rescue
What is Search & Rescue (SAR)?
Search and Rescue (SAR) teams are highly trained volunteers who respond 24/7 to emergencies in the mountains, wilderness, and communities. They are called when hikers are lost, climbers are stranded, or natural disasters strike.
SAR is about saving lives — often in the harshest conditions, with little notice, and at great personal risk.
The Role of Volunteers
Most SAR responders in the U.S. are volunteers.
-
They leave their jobs and families at a moment’s notice.
-
They train year-round in navigation, rope rescue, medical aid, avalanche safety, and more.
-
They provide their own gear, fuel, and time — all without pay.
On average, a single mission can take 10–20 volunteers and last 8–12 hours, often in dangerous or remote terrain.
The Challenges They Face
Volunteer SAR teams need:
-
Specialized equipment (radios, GPS units, ropes, stretchers, avalanche beacons).
-
Ongoing training to stay certified and mission-ready.
-
Community support to offset costs — since funding is minimal and inconsistent.
Without outside help, many teams operate with aging gear and out-of-pocket expenses.
